Charity with Dignity
The Charity With Dignity Program was created to provide emergency assistance to community members in the greatest need. Through various forms of short-term and monthly assistance, we are able to respond quickly to those in critical situations.
Construction
The construction program’s main areas of focus are:
- Block homes
- Wood homes
- Hybrid homes (a combination of block and wood)
- Fuel-efficient stoves
In addition, the construction program oversees all major remodeling projects for the Mission and programs and any special construction projects that the Mission undertakes.
Healthcare
Quality healthcare is a basic human right. The Mission provides healthcare for San Lucas and the surrounding communities through a hospital and a Health Promoter Program. The hospital has been led by Dr. Rafael Tun, a San Lucas native, since 1998. Services include consultations, ultrasound, x-ray, maternity & delivery room, ER, dentistry, podiatry, pharmacy and an ambulance. The Health Promoter Program focuses on child nutrition, diabetes, and general healthcare support in the rural communities surrounding San Lucas.
Education
Colegio Monseñor Gregorio Schaffer was opened in 1968 by Fr. Greg and the School Sisters of Notre Dame with the goal of providing education to all children in and around San Lucas Tolimán, especially the indigenous Maya population. Today, the school provides preschool through 6th-grade education to over 600 students annually. With a focus on Montessori in the younger grades and vocational opportunities as they get older, the school has developed a reputation for a rigorous, Catholic education which serves the whole person.
The Women’s Center
The Women’s Center was created to provide a welcoming place for women to take classes in sewing, weaving and cooking so that they can earn their own income. The Women’s Center is a favorite place for visitors because they can observe traditional weaving techniques as well as purchase products directly from the women who made them.
