Empowered by Weaving: Oralia’s Story

Meet Oralia! She learned to weave at the San Lucas Mission Women’s Center. We recently spoke with her about her latest weaving project and how the Women’s Center has impacted her life. Read on to learn more!

How long does it take you to complete a weaving like this?
This type of weaving takes approximately 15 days to complete, depending on the design and the color combinations. It’s a slow process because every detail requires attention.

What inspired you to select the colors for this weaving?
I was inspired by how striking the colors look together and the figures that adorn them. It’s a color that sells well, and I think that makes the pieces more attractive to people.

What symbols or shapes have you included in this weaving, and what do they represent?
This weaving features flowers. Since this weaving is a table runner that is generally placed in the kitchen, I wanted to reflect delicacy in the figures. Also, these pieces aim to beautify home spaces, making them more meaningful.

Could you explain how the creation of a backstrap weaving begins and develops?
First, we wind the threads, then we begin the weaving process by placing the sticks and the cord, which hold the weaving in place. Next, we select specific threads for the figures and the center of the weaving. From there, we start forming the design. It’s a manual job that requires a lot of precision and patience.

How has the Women’s Center impacted your life economically?
The support from the Center has been incredible. They’ve taught us how to weave, improve our skills, and also market our products. Thanks to the Women’s Center, many of us have been able to generate our own income, giving us independence and allowing us to contribute to our families’ well-being. Before, we depended heavily on our husbands, but now we can contribute economically, which gives us a sense of pride and productivity.

Why did you decide to join the Women’s Center and focus on weaving?
I’ve always loved artisanal work, and when I heard about the Women’s Center, I was interested in learning. I focused on weaving because it’s something I truly enjoy. Plus, I knew that learning to weave would help me generate income for my family. A friend recommended the Center, and since then, I’ve been coming here, learning and improving my skills.

How has participating in the Women’s Center impacted your personal life?
It has been very positive, both emotionally and economically. I come here to relax, and the best part is that I always bring my daughter with me, which allows us to share this experience. My husband also supports me in this. This space has not only given me skills but also valuable time for myself and my family.

What are your plans after this project? Do you see yourself continuing to create more weavings?
Yes, after this table runner, I want to create another one with a different combination of colors, like black and light blue. I’m excited to keep creating and seeing how each piece comes to life.

Is there anything you’d like to share with the donors who make the Women’s Center possible?
I want to thank them deeply because their support truly makes a difference in our lives. Thanks to their donations, we have access to materials, learning, and opportunities to generate income. For me, it’s been a significant change since I can now help my family and be more independent. Plus, I’m learning something I can pass on to my children, which gives me even more satisfaction. Without the donors, this wouldn’t be possible, so we are very grateful for everything they do for us.
